Lumber Sales
All of the Hardwood lumber we carry is Kiln Dried to NHLA standards and originates from North Carolina mountains all the way to Pennsylvania and New York. Some species such as Alder comes from the Oregon area.
Grades
Lumber is available in several grades from #2 common to Select and Better or FAS (First and Seconds). All lumber is stored in a rough state until orders are placed.
Surfacing
We offer free surfacing of 4/4 stock from 1/2" to 15/16"(hit and miss) and 5/4 stock from1" to 1-3/16(hit and miss) or 8/4 stock from 1-1/4" to 1-7/8(hit and miss) with a straight line rip on one side. This is refered to as S3S, one side edge of the board is still in the rought state from the kiln. If demension stock is desired see below in mouldings for S4S faceplate stock. Standard thicknesses are 13/16" for 4/4, 1" for 5/4 and 1-3/4" for 8/4. All lumber is surfaced with a double roughing planer usually to within 1/16" for final thickness. This is not a finish surface planer. Most customers order 13/16" thick stock and plan on removing 1/16" from either a finish planer or from final sanding.
How to calculate Footages
We sell lumber as gross footages refered to as board footage(BF). Net footage is actual square footage such as 12" x 12" x 1" = 1 square foot. Board footage (BF) is how lumber is calculated after surfacing and straight line riping have taken place which accounts for the loss of wood after the milling process. Typically, surfacing and straight line ripping is a 17% fee, therefore a 12" x 12" x 1" board after surfacing is equal to 1.2 BF, meaning the original board was 17% larger to end up with a finished 12" x 12".
Thickness only effects the factor to multiply by. 4/4 stock is a multiple of 1, 5/4 stock is a multiple of 1.25 and 8/4 stock is a multiple of 2. Example, if you had a 10" x 12" block of wood and it was surfaced to 1-3/4" the board footage is calculated as 10W * 12L * 2(thickness) / .83(shrinkage) to give 2 BF.
